Terri Bjerre AKA Terri B heads back to Brisbane this month as part of a world tour. Chad Watson spoke to the rising soul star.
With a worldwide tour underway, appearances on the new Ministry annual and the release of her first solo album, Terri B is swiftly becoming a name to keep an eye on.
"My life manifesto has been and will always be breaking down barriers and ignoring commentary from people who haven't walked in my shoes," Terri told Queensland Pride. With a manifesto such as that it's clear she has lived an unusual life, having grown up as military child. She admits she had her own insecurities when she says what inspired her to get into the industry: "I was afraid to do music. It seemed really unsafe and I didn't truly think anyone wanted to hear my low voice. But I became more confident when my younger sister told me she was irritated with my attempt to be a soprano, so I embraced who and what I am."
The move towards self-acceptance paid off, as she's achieving such popular status through her music within the club scene. Soul Dedication is the title of her first solo album. With nine of the ten tracks written by Terri herself there's no denying you will get a taste of the passionate energy that you get from her live performance. Her cover of ‘On The Radio' will easily become an album favourite.
She's collaborated with some of the best of the business. Roger and Burhan G, Roger Sanchez, DJ Antoine and DONS are just few of the many she has previously collaborated with. And she is truly all about sharing the music. While on tour, Australia is swiftly becoming one of her favourite places to visit and feels like a second home. A supporter of equality, Terri had no problem answering when asked if she was for or against gay marriage and civil unions.
"How someone wants to share their life, their property, their children, its private and I am sad they scared poor religious people into believing that they lose funding for their church if they agree to civil unions.
"It's a mess but I hope this becomes a non-issue. It's not anyone's business, only the couple. So yes, marry and share your lives the way you want. It can't and shouldn't be an issue. It makes me irritated that people want to run people's lives."
Terri says she shares a soft spot for the LGBT community as she feels they were the first to welcome her with open arms. "They were the first and they love me when I don't have a hit song, and I'm not too thin, or feeling really good about myself. I think that's why Whitney Houston also finds a good fan base in the community. They are so real and open." With a few major plans for the future such as more collaboration, a possible show at the Opera House and more tours, get ready to hear the name Terri B for sometime to come. |
